Winterface reviews

We are always full of expectations before the release. It’s always curious to see how people evaluate new application. It’s like giving birth to a baby. Nobody knows who this baby is going to become in future. The process of growing up mostly depends on the parents and the surroundings.
Most of the reviewers highly estimated our work, although there are many features that the applications lacks it is considered to be a good start. We’ll try not to disappoint everybody’s expectations and work hard on improving Winterface – next generation mobile shell. Among the features that we consider to add and change are:

  • weather forecast
  • change start up gesture (perhaps it will be different)
  • calendar, tasks and alarms support

Further, I’ve put the extracts from several reviews by WM experts published at different Windows Mobile sources so that you could read about Winterface in detail.

Review at JAMM by Douglas Goldring:

“I have to say that I was extremely impressed by Winterface. It is simple and easy to use, yet it is also ready to become a powerful tool on your device. I say ready to become, because I look at this as much more of a starting point than a finished product. This is a program with a lot of potential, which has just barely begun to be recognized. I pointed out some of the features which I felt were missing and I am sure you could find more. Winterface is a rare program, however, that I think could easily add numerous features and become considerably more powerful, without significantly increasing the complexity of the program, due to the fantastic job Vito has done designing the core of this program. I have tested pretty much the entire iWindows Mobile line, and I have to say that while I thought they were all good programs, none of them impressed me as much as Winterface. I think Vito has a real winter…er…winner on its hands with this one, and I cannot wait to see what will be included in future versions.”

Review at BostonPocketPC by Don Sorcinelli:

“There are any number of ways that a developer can make a given user interface more effective for the user. Winterface is yet another great example of this principle. By providing a visually pleasing, easy to customize and friendly to navigate alternative to the standard Window Mobile Professional Today screen, VITO Technology has once again proven their ability to “think outside the box” with their latest product offering. I encourage users looking for a simple but effective way of interacting with your Windows Mobile device to give Winterface a try. But be careful – you may not want to return to your old Today Screen if you do.”

Review at My Today Screen by Tariq Bamadhaj:

“I think Winterface is definitely a step in the right direction for VITO. Some may shrug it off as copying the Apple iPhone’s interface but I say if something works great, why not take the idea and improve on it? That’s just exactly what VITO has done in this case. What’s great is that if you don’t like the interface, you could always uninstall it. The beauty of Windows Mobile.

Anyway, back to Winterface. There are some missing features in the application but considering it was just launched, I am sure VITO has a long list of requests sent in from the users who have used it and that they would consider them for the next version. From my discussion with VITO, I’ve been told that they are looking into some of these features which is good news. I just hope they can implement it soon enough.”

Review at XDA Site by Martyn:

“On the whole, this is an excellent application. It´s thought through and works well. So far I have not had to revert to using my stylus with it, everything is finger friendly. I have also installed it on my Dell Axim, which has a VGA display. Again, no problems (and looks even better!). So if you are thinking of getting a new Diamond or TouchPro in the near future, you can be sure that this will work on that too. And, even though its not aimed at WM2003, Genesis installed it to his XDA IIi and it works on that too! For £10 (€12.50), this is a bargin!”

Fantastic program but a bit black and white! I like it simple but a few colour touches would help, somthing with a slight glow perhaps along the lines of HTC’s home screen icons?

    Nice Product with great potential.

    Suggestions and Observations:

    *Add Color Icons

*Contacts added to pages need to remain synced with actual contacts. If you edit contact, the contact you created on one of your pages does not change. They should remain synced. This is a computer – you shouldn’t need to manually do this. Also show all info – don’t require us to go back to Mobile Interface to see address, birthdays, etc.

*Contacts are displayed only by name and not, file as. For example, in Outlook, I sort by Company Name and not Last Name. So when I go looking through contacts I need to remember the name of the person and not the Company. The file system should reflect how it is in the Address book on the phone.

*Weather application is missing major cities (e.g. Los Angeles, and New York), and the city I chose has incorrect data – not even close to reality. Also, you should be able to enter your local zipcode and choose from local cities.

*Battery Icon should show % of energy remaining and also indicate when phone is being charged.

*Add Lock Screen icon – only way to lock phone is to press power button.

*Include indication of Alarms in Clock icon. Press it and it should list them in transparent window like appointments, and then give a option to go to alarm settings

*Add Windows Settings icon – there are some functions that can’t be accessed by the Applications/Settings in the Winterface Menu

*Bluetooth Icon needs to accurately reflect status. I have paired the phone with my car. The icon now indicates Bluetooth is ON, even though it is turned off. Before I paired the phone it indicated OFF.

*Have a button that indicates whether you’re using wi-fi (i.e. Network Status)

Overall a very nice interface and I look forward to the next update.
