Winterface gesture

Dear Winterface users,

Here is a link to Winterface with a different starting gesture. In this version the gesture is “upside down tick”, or “upside down V”
Please, use it for a while and let us know through comments how it performs:

1) Does it start Winterface every time you want it?
2) Does it conflict with other 3rd party software you are using?

  1. Wraggy Says:

Hi, being a bit stupid, I couldn’t work out what the new gesture was… the start up panel has the same information as the old version ?

  2. Pedro Lino Says:

I think they forgot to post this

“Here is a version of Winterface that has a different gesture. In this version the gesture is “upside down tick”, or “upside down V”.”

  3. Wraggy Says:

I’ll give it another go… BTW anyway to preserve settings over installs, all the settings went back to their defaults!… it’s rather a pain!

  4. Wraggy Says:

OK, so I tried really hard with the upside down V and found it really didn’t work for me… perhaps others will find it easier…

  5. Pedro Lino Says:

I haven’t tried this build. And since it deletes all settings, I’m not sure I will :)

Does the registered version have this bug? I doesn’t make any sense to have to configure everything whenever you do an update… Olga? Dimitri?

  6. Pedro Lino Says:

Sorry for the double post. Unfortunately I can’t edit my posts (if this was a forum I could do that ;) )

To backup your settings, you only need to copy settings_cache.db and pages.db from the Winterface folder to some safe place (your SD card) and then copy back after updating.

Unfortunately this looses links to programs not installed, i.e. with only shortcuts on the Start Menu folder.

  7. TheAccuser Says:

After testing out the update today, I am reporting that it is working perfect for me. I have not accidentally triggered Winterface from other applications yet. I can actually use Opera beta now while having Winterface installed! :) At first the ^ wasn’t triggering Winterface 100% of the time, but after just 5 minutes of use, I nail it every time…you just have to make sure that the ^ actually has a point at the top and that it doesn’t look like an upside-down U. I do have a hard time doing it while holding my device with just my left hand, but can peform the gesture accurately with my right hand. I’m sure that’s just me as my left thumb is retarded.

  8. TheAccuser Says:

Another thing. VITO, you guys should have really emailed this out to registered users. I didn’t have a clue this was available until today, when I checked this site manually.

  9. TheAccuser Says:

Is there a way to assign Winterface a hard button? I tried assigning it to my “record” button, but all it does is bring up the help picture that shows how to launch Winterface. If this is not available, now…can this please be added as a feature. This would just be similar to the iPhone’s hard button.

  10. Dexterously Says:

I would like to ask a quick question about SMS-Chat. How can you create custom emoticons. I was able to get them to display and masked. I added them to the smiles file with how I wanted it displayed, but the colors look bad. I think it might be the bmp format I’m using. Can you provide basic information on how to create custom smiles for SMS-Chat?

  11. TheAccuser Says:

Please only use these comments for Winterface discussions. http://www.ppcgeeks.com or http://www.pdaphone.com are great places for your SMS-Chat question.

  12. Olga Says:

    TheAccuser Says,
thanks for reporting about it, we’ve already had many responses from our users. Most probabaly the gesture will be ^.
We shall think of asigning button. Perhaps we’ll add this oppurtunity.

    Dexterously,
Could you possibly send me an e-mail with your ideas. I’ll wether I can help you. And please explain what “custom smiles” mean. Thank you!

  13. Dexterously Says:

I’ll be happy to send you an email, what’s your address? What I mean by custom smiles is following the pattern that SMS-Chat uses to display emoticons but be able to create my own. Same size of bitmaps, and create the mask etc… I am a software developer and I would love to be able to throw out some ideas to you, maybe they’ll be good enough to be considered.

    Thank you!

At first: The new gesture works fine for me!

VITO: Wouldn’t it be great to add a feature to Winterface that makes it possible to show any third party today plugins (like TodayAgenda or WeatherPanel) “inside” of a Winterface Page? So users could use their favourite calendar or weather plugins directly inside of Winterface without shutting it down to see their standard today screen!

  16. Bassey Says:

Bit late to the game but the new gesture works perfectly for me. Thanks to TheAccuser’s tip above for making sure there is a “point” on the gesture.

Is there going to be a version of winterface where the lock screen is optional as well?

  17. randomperson Says:

    This build is far better.

I no longer find winterface poping up every time i am browsing web on opera or PIE.

For the next version of winterface could you please add a today plugin? so winterface does not always dissaper when pushing red end key or when i close an app.

I want this as my main interphase.

  18. eric2k Says:

    Hey Vito Technology and Olya

First off I have to say thank you to you guys for creating such an amazing Windows Mobile application/Mobile shell. You guys are really raising the bar for all the other developers out there on this platform and for other cell phone OEM manufactures.

Anyhow, I have been using Winterface heavily. I Really like it. Here is my list of suggestions and general thoughts. No way is this ment to disrespect or discredit your work. I just love it and cant help but suggest the following.

    1. Please add a today plug-in ASAP.

    * I dislike gesturing to always bring Winterface back up. Or using the standby button to bring it back.
    * I see no reason why this can not be added? comment on this suggestion?

    2. Please fix the battery icon.

    * it links to nothing.
    * Perhaps it is just the upside down V gesture beta I downloaded off your guy’s blog, but it wont open battery settings right now.

    3.Task manager built into winterface

    * I know this is an easy improvement. Please can you SHOW the memory % in use and update as you closethings.
    * maybe even the CPU %? This would be so great. also show as you close things the updated %

4.Winterface needs a weather app built into it

    * ASAP. what needs to be added is something similar to task manager built into Winterface.
    * A pop up window with the weather integrated into it. This is doable i know you guys can do it.

    5.The slide to unlock

    * sometimes it lags before you can slide and unlock the phone.
    * Perhaps add a password option so that once you slide to unlock you have to tap a numeric password? That would be nice.

    6.The “Profile” sound menu

    * add an “advanced link that takes you to the sounds and notification settings link. THIS WOULD BE VERY EASY addon so worth it.

Those are my main issues I have with Winterface that need to be addressed in the coming versions asap.

Their is one other gripe a lot of people have and comment on. We should be able to add custom image on background?. Perhaps allow people to develop custom icons or select icon files. Some people whine about IE’s grayed out icon and want the colour one for instance. I dont care about this at this point at the produts development

What would be nice is the background image, but it might mess up the slide to unlock at present you can see all the emails/missed calls/sms’s ETC even though its darkened. Pictures might ruin that. So you would maybe have to re work the slide to unlock to show notifcations differently. Keep this in mind before adding images. Rather wait then have this issue.

Perhapes if main menu has custom background. Slide to unlock can have a new notication showing missed/new things AND HAVE ITS OWN BACKGROUND?

The V gesture right now does not always worked…. but like i said today plugin is the way to go.

Anyhow, if you ever need someone to beta test or provide thought out feedback on things i am your man. give me an email.

  19. Jeannette Says:

    Hello,

Been using winterface 1.11 for a few days. I like it ok but the gesture thing is a pain. I see where you need it if a phone has no buttons or no soft buttons but there should be an option to use a button or soft button whe you have them.
I have it working with S2U2 and that’s good as S2U2 gives me the Weather, messages and reminders on the screen. When I close S2U2 winterface opens up even if it was closed. Don’t know why it does that but I like it that way.
In a few days I am going to decide if I want to pay or not. I bought the keyboard from Vito and I like that so I may go for Winterface also.

  20. Pem Says:

I think Winterface could learn a lot from HTC TouchFlo’s gestures.

I found both /\ and \/ to be hard/annoying sometimes. Even the left to right gesture I found myself sometimes accidentally pressing one of the applications/links. I really like HTC TouchFlo’s gestures of | (gesture up straight line) to bring up the shortcuts, gesture left/right to go through them, and gesture down straight line to put it away.

I like HTC TouchFlo’s left/right gesture noticeably better than Winterface; TouchFlo is (relatively) so easy and so smooth. I think the problem with the Winterface one is that I have to left/right gesture near the edge of the screen maybe (or maybe in too straight a line?), when I just want to left/right gesture anywhere and easily (for ex, as long as I did 50%+ of the total screen for any part of the screen, rather than I think Winterface says as long as I do to the edge of the screen), like HTC TouchFlo does. And it should also wrap when scrolling the shortcut screens such as 1231 or 3213 (like HTC TouchFlo does).

What I like about Winterface is the customizable iPhone-esque simple rows/columns of icons. (Btw, there is no point in not letting the user put an icon in the bottom right corner).

What I really want though is for Winterface to replace my HTC TouchFlo shortcuts (on my XV6900) with a gesture of just | (up to bring up the shortcuts, down to put the shortcuts away). This is very important, because I don’t want Winterface to replace my Today screen. Instead, I want Winterface to replace my HTC Touch Flo shortcuts.

I also want the option to turn off the lock/slider. When I come back from standby, I don’t want to see this stupid lock slider, I think it’s pointless and annoying. I already unlocked my phone when I pressed the “power” button to turn the screen on, why do I have to unlock it again? Furthermore, I want the option to turn off this behavior of Winterface showing up when I come back from standby. Instead, I want gesture up to bring up Winterface only when I want it, and gesture down to go back to where I was (again, just like HTC TouchFlo)

So I want to be able to 1(turn off HTC TouchFlo) and 2(make straight line gesture up bring up Winterface, and straight line gesture down go back to wherever I was before bringing up winterface). In other words, I want Winterface to replace HTC TouchFlo as my way of getting to my quick shortcuts (from anywhere).

Just trying to share some ideas, I know it was a bit too wordy… thanks!

  21. Pem Says:

A summary of my above post is (referencing TouchFlo on my Verizon XV6900, aka HTC Touch):
    1) do not replace the Today screen; instead, replace HTC TouchFlo’s shortcuts
    2) learn from HTC TouchFlo’s gestures, instead of these crazy /\ \/ stuff, do a simple up line gesture to bring Winterface up, and a simple down line gesture to leave Winterface and go back down to where I was (I want to see it visually move up/down too like TouchFlo does)
    3) do not send me to Winterface when I came back from standby, and do not lock it; I only want to see Winterface to use for shortcuts when I bring it up with an up gesture

Can anybody tell me serial code for Winterface 1.1 or newer version. I shall be highly thankful to you. TIA

  25. lmr Says:

The only thing keeping me from buying Winterface are the gestures commands. Closing screens works okay (10% error perhaps) but returning tot Winterface from the today screen just never seems to work. I accidently trigger some kind of function 7 out of 10 times. I really look forward to possibility to assign Winterface to a hard button, until then I will try to endure.

  26. Dam Says:

On my HTC Elf I don’t seem to get the gesture to work. Every time I ‘wake up’ my phone with the putton on top of my phone, I get the normal today screen, and the gesture does not work. Is there another way to activate Winterface by shortcut?

  27. Konstantink Says:

    Dam,
It will appear in th next version. You will be able to launch winterface the regular way. Just as any other program.

  28. arisham Says:

I’m using O2 Mini (Windows Mobile 2003 SE)..

    1. Winterface 1.14 – couldn’t make the lock screen function. Is this function just for WM5 above?. Would be appreciated if VITO can create lock screen similiar for WM2003.

    2. Just downloaded the Weather plugin. When i click Kuala Lumpur, sometimes it hang, restart my PPC and I received not update error. How to update the weather?

    Thanxs.

  29. Marc Says:

I like Winterface a lot, but I do not like the gesture at all. I would rather see Winterface being a today-screen plugin itself. It would be a perfect replacement for TouchFLow.
